Mobile Ballet will present Sleeping Beauty March 23-24 at the Mobile Civic Center Theater, with performances on Saturday, March 23, at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, March 24, at 2:00 pm. The Saturday 7:00pm performance will feature the Mobile Ballet Orchestra playing the iconic score live, led by conductor David Ott.
Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and a cast of fantastical characters will captivate audiences, in this new adaptation by Katia Garza after the original by Marius Petipa. In this full-length ballet, the malevolent fairy Carabosse curses Princess Aurora to 100 years of slumber by a single prick of her finger on her 16th birthday. Doomed by fate, only a prince's loving kiss can break the evil spell and awaken the sleeping beauty. Mobile Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty will transport you on a mystical journey in this timeless story where good versus evil and the power of love overcomes all obstacles.
This enchanting ballet is a masterclass in the classical style, ideal for lifelong ballet lovers as well as newcomers. Outstanding guest artists will join the Mobile Ballet Company onstage, including principal dancer Nayara Lopes of Philadelphia Ballet as Princess Aurora, Daniel Benavides as Carabosse, and more.
Come experience classical ballet at its finest! Tickets are $22-$66 at www.mobileballet.org
Mobile Ballet is the Alabama Gulf Coast’s premier classical ballet school and company. Founded in 1987, Mobile Ballet’s mission is to provide superior dance education, to present quality performances, and to promote the ballet to the community as an expression of the human spirit. As a nonprofit organization serving the community, Mobile Ballet has made a tremendous impact on the cultural, artistic, and economic landscape of the greater Mobile area.
Mobile Ballet is proud to present three major productions each year for the community to enjoy. These productions are performed by Mobile Ballet students and the auditioned Mobile Ballet Company along with extraordinary guest artists from around the world.
The Mobile Ballet School, with two studios in Mobile and Daphne, provides dance instruction to over 300 students annually, age 3 to adult. We offer superior dance training in a professional and encouraging atmosphere focused on artistic excellence and inclusion, with world-renowned leadership and a seasoned faculty of professional instructors.
The Mobile Ballet Company includes up to 40 auditioned positions with the opportunity to join exceptional guest artists on stage in the season’s three signature productions. Many of our school alumni dance professionally or have gone on to careers in dance education.
Our Discover Dance program offers special fully-staged performances of our season productions exclusively for K-12 students, giving many children their first introduction to a ballet performance in the theater and sparking a lifelong love of the performing arts. We recognize the positive impact both arts education and exposure to performing arts have on students, and we are honored to introduce over 3,000 students each year to ballet and the beauty of live performances through this program. Along with professional performing artists, the majority of dancers cast in Mobile Ballet performances are local students, from elementary through high school age, trained at the Mobile Ballet School. A profoundly impactful part of the Discover Dance program is when students have the opportunity to see dancers close to their own age performing alongside professional practicing artists.
Through our Share the Dance initiative, we have also been able to broaden audience outreach to under-resourced members of the community through partnership with area nonprofit organizations. Thanks to donor support, we have been able to provide over 10,000 complimentary tickets through Share the Dance.
Mobile Ballet is supported by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the City of Mobile, and Mobile County Commission, along with a broad base of support from local foundations, corporations, and individual donors. Mobile Ballet is a proud member of the Mobile Arts Council and the Alabama Dance Council.
