In October, Tyler Perry shocked fans of his most beloved character, Mabel “Madea” Simmons, by announcing that he would be ending the near 20-year run of the mouthy, grey-haired senior citizen who started it all. “I just don’t want to be her age [still] playing her,” he joked. But Gulf Coast fans will have the opportunity to get their final fix in person when Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play Tour comes to the Mobile Civic Center Arena on May 21.

Madea’s Farewell Play Tour is Perry’s 21st stage play and features Tamela Mann, David Mann, and Cassi Davis Patton. In 2000,  Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself play marked the first appearance of the now-legendary Madea. The God-fearing, gun-toting, pot-smoking, loud-mouthed grandmother, Madea, was played by Perry himself. Madea was such a resounding success, she soon spawned a series of plays – Madea’s Family Reunion (2002), Madea’s Class Reunion (2003), Madea Goes To Jail (2005) – and films, including Perry’s first feature film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which debuted at number one nationwide. His ensuing films have all been met with massive commercial success, delighting audiences across America and around the world. Madea’s Farewell Play Tour will coincide with the character’s final movie appearance, A Madea Family Funeral, which is set for release on March 1.
